#ReadProud Reading Challenge

June is #PrideMonth and to celebrate, I decided that I would spend the month working through my Queer TBR pile … and I'm encouraging you all to join me! I hope lots of readers will join in to read LGBTQ books from all different genres and discover some new great reads.

This is a 4-week challenge. Each week will have 2 categories. You can participate on two levels:

(1) GOLD:  Read two books per week, one from each category, totalling 8.

(2) SILVER: Read one book from one category a week, totalling 4.

Successful completers of the challenge will be entered in a prize draw:

GOLD: $100 Amazon Gift Card (or B&N/Waterstones if preferred!)

SILVER: $50 Amazon Gift Card (or B&N/Waterstones if preferred!)

Rules:

1) You must read in the weekly categories to be eligible. However, you do not have to read the suggested books. You may find your own reads in the relevant categories.

2) You must post your reviews on GoodReads and at least one retailer website. You shoud link these in the comments on the relevant week's post (on this blog). These reviews can be negative or positive.

3) These reads must be new reviews. This means you can't recycle old reviews or old Arc reviews. You need to post the review in the relevant week.

4) Post in the comments to introduce yourself and your blog/twitter handle!

Here is a badge to put on your blogs if you plan to blog the event!

  1. I will definitely participate in this. I already planned on reading If I Was Your Girl, George and Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel. This set up is perfect. Thanks for recommending more books to check out as well. You’re the best!

    1. I hope it all works out! Lots of people have been suggesting books via Twitter as well, so there are loads of suggestions!

  2. This is going to be awesome. I want to go for the gold, but realistically I will probably end up in Silver. I’m going to share these rules and my own selections and suggestions on my blog later.

    1. You’re going to be brilliant. I’m excited for your buddy reads! You guys are my favourite Blogger Couple.Β

  3. Shooting for gold, but it could end up being a silver month! Looking forward to this challenge anyway. Would it be all right to post about this on my blog? :>

My tentative reading schedule, if anyone is looking for more suggestions:

Trans YA – Everett Maroon’s THE UNINTENTIONAL TIME TRAVELLER

M/M contemporary – Amy Jo Cousins’s FIVE DATES (picked a short book for this one since I have friends coming into town)

    F/F spec fic – K.S. Trenten’s FAIREST

QUILTBAG MG – Alex Gino’s GEORGE

    Authors of color – G.L. Tomas’s FRIENDS THAT STILL… (sequel to F*THS)

    F/F contemporary – Karis Walsh’s HARMONY

Gay YA – Shaun David Hutchinson’s THE FIVE STAGES OF ANDREW BRAWLEY

Wildcard – Sara Gaines’s NOBLE FALLING (unless I get approved for a certain historical F/F e-ARC, then that…or both, who knows, let’s be adventurous)

  4. I have so many books to get through in June that I’m aiming for SILVER in this excellent challenge πŸ™‚
Week 1: IF I WAS YOUR GIRL by Meredith Russo
Week 2: GEORGE by Alex Gino
Week 3: TREASURE by Rebekah Weatherspoon
Week 4: JERKBAIT by Mia Siegert
    Let the reading begin!!!

    1. You are going LOVE Jerkbait. It’s so up your alley with the mixed morals protagonist who’s kind of a jerk, but also kind of sweet, with all the family drama.Β

  5. This is so awesome, and thank you for the shoutout! I’ll probably be reading:

Week 1: FIRST AND FIRST by Santino Hassel
Week 2: OF FIRE AND STARS by Audrey Coulthurst
Week 3: ANNIE ON MY MIND by Nancy Garden
Week 4: GOLDEN BOY by Abigail Tarttelin (which is I)

    1. I am so insanely jealous of anyone who currently has a copy of OF FIRE AND STARS. I was like two people behind the cut off for copies at BEA and I decided not to be a horrible person and trample a librarian.Β

SO now I have to wait. *sad sad sad*

  6. OK, so I think I’ll be reading these ones:

    Week 1:
    – Spy Stuff by Matthew J. Metzger
    – Cut and Run by Abigail Roux

    Week 2:
    Unicorn Tracks by Julia Ember
    – One Man Guy by Michael Barakiva

    Week 3:
    – Treasure by Rebekah Weatherspoon
    – Lies we tell Ourselves by Robin Tally

    Week 4:
    – Boy meets boy bt David Levithan
    – If I was your girl by Meredith Russo

It may change if I find something that really call my attention during the mont, I hope that’s alright?

    1. All sounds awesome!!! (especially excited that you’re going to read Unicorn Tracks, of course πŸ˜› )

      1. I’m not sure if it’s quite as 18+ as the others I’ve marked, but it is definitely adult. I’d have rated it more like 15 if it was a movie, though, so it’s hard to know sometimes I think.

  7. This looks like so much fun! I’m going to go for gold, but we’ll see, I’m kind of a putzy reader. I do have one question – can the wild card be a comic book (trade paperback, not just like one issue of a comic book)?

Thanks for all the recs, too, there are a lot of books here I haven’t heard of. πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Kara!

      I’m so excited you’re going to participate.Β

The Wild Card can ABSOLUTELY be a graphic novel or a comic. There are some terrific comics that have come out over the past few years like LUMBERJANES and NIMONA. I would love to see more with LGBTQIA protagonists.Β

  8. OKAY I think I’ve chosen my books! This is going to be a challenge for me, but if I succeed it will be the most books I’ve read in a month, ever. If not, 4 is still pretty impressive for me. /o\

    Week 1:
    * THE UNINTENTIONAL TIME TRAVELER by Everett Maroon
    * COIN TRICKS by Willow Scarlett

    Week 2:
    * UNICORN TRACKS by Julia Ember (I haven’t read this yet! It’s how I found this contest!)
    * GEORGE by Alex Gino

    Week 3:
    * SEVEN TEARS AT HIGH TIDE by CB Lee
    * ANNIE ON MY MIND by Nancy Garden (what a great opportunity to read a classic I haven’t gotten to yet)

    Week 4:
    * BOY MEETS BOY by David Levithan (this has been sitting on my shelf for years)
    * FUN HOME: A FAMILY TRAGICOMIC by Alison Bechdel – if comic books count, if not – FAIREST by K.S. Trenten

  9. That’s a wonderful idea I love it! Guess it will be fun! πŸ˜€
I will try and aim for Silver challenge! Hope I will find some great and lovely books to read!

  10. This is the most AMAZING challenge, I love it so much!!! I will definitely be talking about it in my monthly recap, AND I am going to try my best to participate (I ummm am in over my head with some June ARCs so I likely won’t win, BUT I am starting You Know Me Well soon, AND I plan on reading this one book, you might have heard of it, called Unicorn Tracks? πŸ˜‚ I also really want to read If I Was Your Girl, The Abyss Surrounds Us, The Art of Being Normal, We Are the Ants… I have heard great things about ALL of them! Seriously LOVE this challenge!!

    1. Yay! I hope you’re able to participate! The ABYSS SURROUNDS US is one of my all time favourite books … I love it so so so much. <3

  11. Ugh I’ve already read every LGBT+ book I own or my library has :/ but I’m so glad for this challenge! Happy reading everyone

  12. I’m not sure which books I’ll be reading every week, but I’m going to try and aim for a book from EACH category. At least one a week if I can’t do that though! This is my blog and I’m @shootingstarmag on Twitter.

    -Lauren

    1. Hi Lauren,Β

      Β

yay! I’m so excited you’re going to do the challenge with us!!! Happy Reading!Β

  13. This sounds really exciting! I’m looking forward to giving it a shot. Still trying to figure out what I want to read though. (Would comics or manga that fit the other elements apply to non-wildcard positions? I’ve been really meaning to read Wandering Son and it’s trans YA lit… but is a manga). No matter what, though, it looks great!

  14. I’m excited for this reading challenge! My blog website: http://www.boundlessbookaholic.com/ and my Twitter handle is @nicolelynnhoefs. Here’s my tentative TBR for the month:
WEEK 1 β€” IF I WAS YOUR GIRL by Meredith Russo
WEEK 2 β€” GEORGE by Alex Gino
WEEK 3 β€” EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU by Nina LaCour
WEEK 4 β€” NONE OF THE ABOVE by I.W. Gregorio or THE SUMMER I WASN’T ME by Jessica Verdi

  15. Hi, I am going to try to go for GOLD too. I don’t have a website but my Twitter is @serenajenk and I hope you don’t mind that I probably won’t have a book planned ahead for every category. This challenge inspired me to put all my to-read LGBTQ titles on the same bookcase for inspiration. πŸ™‚

    1. that’s excellent! No there is no requirement to have a website or a blog! Excited that you will be going for gold!

  16. Ahhh, I can’t wait to participate! I wish I could do the gold challenge, but I’m so busy with my summer classes this month that I probably should just stick to the silver challenge… anyway, this looks super fun and thank you so much for starting this challenge! Yay for promoting LGBTQ+ books! πŸ™‚

  17. Thanks again for hosting! I’ve loved this challenge so far and how it’s pushing me to also pick up genres I don’t normally read. My Twitter handle is @readingwishes πŸ™‚
